  6. Except for the bar structure of the tune, there's really nothing "blue" about this performance by trombonists J.J. Johnson and Kai Winding. On the contrary, accompanied by pianist Bill Evans, bassist Paul Chambers and drummer Roy Haynes, the solo work by Jay and Kai on this video is guaranteed to put a smile on your face.
  7. Somewhat ironically, my first exposure to the quintet co-led by trombonists J.J. Johnson and Kai Winding was on a Columbia LP that they shared with the Dave Brubeck Quartet. It was recorded in performance at the Newport Jazz Festival and emcee Willis Conover says at the beginning of their set that their appearance at the NSJ constituted a sort of farewell appearance as a unit!
  8. Recorded in a single session, this edition of the J.J. Johnson/Kai Winding group -- otherwise known as the Jay and Kai Quintet -- was caught on a rare 10" Columbia LP, eventually finding its way into a Mosaic boxed set. In general, Johnson's trombone is heavier in texture and more commanding than the lighter-colored tone of Winding, though the issue is sometimes minimized when one or both use.
  9. Lyrics to 'Blue Monk' by J.J. Johnson & Kai Winding. This Could Be The Start Of Something Big.
